You Can Help Huskers Go Global Saturday

Vote Here for NU-Southern Miss to be Televised Overseas

By Randy York

When Tom Osborne was a U.S. Congressman and made trips around the world for substantive causes, he was always amazed how Nebraska football could make its way into the most unlikely conversations in the most unlikely places. We in the Athletic Department learned how true that was two years ago when we promoted a Red Out Around the World to connect, celebrate and salute Husker fans around the globe for their unparalleled support.

Husker fans started climbing out of the woodwork, telling us the lengths they would go through to experience Big Red Football on Game Day overseas. Aaron Seiler, a Hastings, Neb., native and Northwestern University graduate still living in Chicago, spent a semester studying abroad in Sydney, Australia. He remembers jumping on his computer in the wee hours of the morning, so he could listen to his favorite team on Huskers.com. He also had the Nebraska fight song at his fingertips so he could celebrate in the privacy of his room whenever Nebraska scored. Let’s just say that once the Aussies realized there was a celebration nearby, they became Husker fans, too, and Nebraska football, in all its glory, was explained, adopted, nurtured and continues on to this day.

That’s a long-winded and winding road to get to my point, but I feel it frames up my N-Sider Tip of the Week … a chance for all Husker fans to vote in an ESPN pollthat will help their Big Red overseas “brothers and sisters”  watch Saturday’s historic season opener against Southern Miss. It’s historic because it’s the first candle on a Golden Anniversary cake celebrating 50 consecutive years of Nebraska football sellouts. Almost every Husker fan in the states will have access to the live telecast, but the only hope for Nebraska loyalists overseas is in the hands of a “Viewers’ Choice Poll” on a website called ESPN America. Once you access the website, you will see this under CFB: Viewers’ Choice Poll:

Which of these College Football games would you like to watch on Sept. 1st?

  • Miami (FL) at Boston College
  • Southern Miss at Nebraska
  • Bowling Green at Florida

The poll is flanked by a chance to win a Prince Fielder-signed baseball and the opportunity to win tickets to the World Series. All three options have prominent red vote buttons in their lower right-hand corners. Who knows? Maybe some lucky Husker fan can win an autographed baseball or tickets to the World Series at the same time he/she brings the Nebraska-Southern Miss season-opener into all kinds of homes, apartments and hotel rooms around the world. Think Australia. Think how many other fans might learn what you already know … that there really is no place like Nebraska.
